History of any sort has always been a serious passion of mine. I find it altogether fascinating to be told about the past and believe that it can and will help us to have a brighter future by learning from the mistakes of our past. So as someone who has an avid interest in historical events, people, and how things came to be in our modern society, The 1300 Years’ War: Volume 1 by Robert Maddock certainly piqued my interest. This first volume is meant to document “the evolution of Judeo-Christianity and Islam and the 1,300 years of warfare between them.” Going into this, I was eager to learn about both sides of the coin of this war and the historical reasons for their differences, as well as the similarities to their religions, even if it was unbeknownst to them at the time.
The author has a rich background in academia, as well as a love of history himself, and had also spent time in the Middle East while serving in the military. His interest and passion for this subject are evident within the entirety of this novel which always makes for an exciting read for the audience. Any historian or lover of history, in general, will find this book intriguing and it will serve to raise more questions about the subject than they ever had before.
While the author listed many resources and had extensively researched the subjects that he details in his writing of this volume, I do wish that more had been covered regarding Judaism and Christianity. I would have loved to learn more about their history, the reasons for their part in the war, and maybe had seen a different side of the argument so that the criticisms did not primarily lie on the side of Islam and Muslims. Though I was pleased to see the points in which he discussed the development of their warfare and the Vikings.
I hope to see even more details about the Judeo-Christian sides of this war in the second volume by Maddock, but I found this first volume to be educational and made me want to fall further into the rabbit hole of this historical context to learn even more about the subject.
