The Adopted Son is the story of Joseph Peterson and how he overcame years of abuse to become a successful businessman. This autobiography is an inspiring book which readers will love. The Adopted Son starts with Peterson being in Philadelphia with his parents Dorothy and Harry. Once they move and settle in Indiana, Dorothy began to physically abuse Joseph for 12 years. The abuse went on for years without Harry intervening to stop it, further making life unbearable for Joseph. After Harry’s death, Dorothy became more mentally abusive and was never satisfied with anything Joseph did or gave her. Joseph finally breaks free from Dorothy by relying on his Christian faith. Joseph then finds a fulfilling career with Crown Technologies, marries, and has a family. Peterson finally finds the unconditional love he’s searching for through his faith and family.

Peterson’s writing is so emotional and relatable that readers will feel his heartbreaking and ultimately heartwarming story. When Peterson describes the emotional and physical trauma he endured, readers can easily empathize with him. The Adopted Son also details how he felt as an adopted child and how he longed to find his biological family as an adult for closure in his life.

In The Adopted Son, Peterson also describes how his Catholic faith not only helped him run successful businesses, but to have a loving relationship with his wife and children. He writes eloquently about how religion has guided him in his life when he felt unsure about himself and the direction his life was taking. Peterson truly lives his faith by forgiving his abusive mother and being optimistic about overcoming the negative events in his life. Though he suffered so terribly at the hands of his mother, Peterson writes a testimony about how God helped him survive the child abuse to have a prosperous and joyous life later as an adult.

The Adopted Son would be best for survivors of child abuse or counselors of people who survived childhood trauma. Readers who have read child abuse autobiographies like A Child Called It by Dave Pelzer or The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls will also be enlightened by this memoir as well. Even readers who haven’t experienced trauma can learn how child abuse survivors overcome trauma. Peterson’s book could also be read by Christians who want inspiration in how to move past difficult situations in life.

The Adopted Son is a moving memoir that will engage readers. Peterson has written a book that will help people know that no matter what they face in life, with love they can survive.
