Books are often described as being wild rides, but this book is the definition of a wild ride. Crime, sex, and a familial bond all play significant roles in this crime thriller that will keep you riveted to the last page. This book is not a whodunit for those looking for a mystery; it is straightforward in its story and its intent. However, that doesn’t make it any less electrifying. The Detective’s Sons is an extraordinary story, as you will come to find out.
Dominic Carbonaro is an NYPD detective with a problem. He has two sons, and while Dennis does his best to make his parents proud, Ray is the opposite of what a detective wants from a son. He’s had multiple arrests for petty crimes, and his problems are about to become much worse. As Ray’s problems worsen, Dominic and Dennis struggle to keep their family and lives together. A developing love triangle between the brothers and life-changing family secrets leads to a confrontation that will change everyone’s lives.
Author Walter Signorelli’s knowledge of lawyers and court proceedings is evident in this story. His expert writing on these matters makes this book even more enjoyable because it helps suspend disbelief and makes the story feel more authentic. So much life happens in this book that it almost feels like three stories in one, but it never gets dull. Mr. Signorelli’s command of the page makes these characters some of the most believable and relatable that will ever come alive on the page. You will be emotionally investing in these characters, perhaps a little too much.
One of the most interesting aspects of this story is there are no clear-cut good and bad guys. Mr. Signorelli doesn’t create this perfect space where good defeats evil; instead, his book resides in the gray area we all live in. The characters in this story are all deeply flawed, but none of them – except maybe one – mean to be bad people. It is compelling to join this cast in your mind and fight the same feelings they do as they traverse one terrible situation after another.
It is rare that a book can get your heart pounding, but this may be the one. Much of this story takes place in a courtroom, but it is anything but procedural. The vibrant characters and hair-raising situations they find themselves in will keep you locked into this book until the very last page. This book is sure to find its way into many an avid reader’s personal collection.
