From as far back as I can remember, I loved a good suspense novel. I’m the kind of reader that likes to escape into the pages of a book and then goes through withdrawal once I reach the final climax. When I find a book that I can’t put down and I finish it in a matter of a few days, I put it at the top of my repeat reading list. This is definitely true in the case of The Spider Weeps by author Dolly Coley.
Kidnapping, sex, drugs and murder are the key ingredients to this gripping tale which features Kate, a woman who is kidnapped and put through more torment than anyone can imagine. She is used to quench the sexual desires of the big boss and subsequently drugged and taken back home when he tires of her company. Upon her return she doesn’t exactly get the love and support one would expect after suffering such an ordeal. Instead, her family doesn’t believe she had been held against her will; even her brother Bryn is under the impression she has simply been off on a honeymoon rather than being abused by her captor. Feeling alone and unsupported she looks for help elsewhere and finds another victim as well as a private detective willing to help find the people responsible for what happened to her.
The author does a fantastic job of drawing you in from page one, telling a backstory that is fraught with tension and concern for a young girl in a very sordid and all too familiar situation. While upsetting, it definitely sets the stage for the kind of suspense the reader is about the encounter throughout the rest of the book. The story itself is well written and there is added drama with the private detective who has his own troubled past as well as Kate’s brother, Bryn. Dolly Coley weaves her story well and keeps the tension flowing throughout with ease.
The Spider Weeps is definitely a page-turner of a read. The author tells a tale that, while fictional, reminds us of the real-world issue of human trafficking and the destruction it leaves in its wake. It is a gripping story and one I highly recommend diving into when you are ready for your next great read.
