No matter how good a person may be, or what they present to the world, everyone has a secret. A secret which they hold close to the vest, hiding it from the world at large. Some secrets are harmless, only affecting a person’s personal life, and not really having any sort of impact on the world at large. Yet there are far more powerful and shocking secrets out there, and some are so damaging or harmful people will be willing to go to lengths they never thought possible to keep these secrets hidden. It is for this reason that honesty and openness are so highly encouraged, as these secrets are not only dangerous for the person holding onto the secret, but those around them as well.
The power of secrets and the damage those secrets can do for people in power is the main driving force behind author Shaun Goldsmith’s The Spire. The author brings to life a new detective protagonist which readers will instantly connect with, Mike Vogel. When Detective Vogel gets the call for an emerging threat, he discovers a quadruple murder and a missing witness who becomes the prime suspect in the case. Yet not all is as it seems, as the victims are former associates of a disgraced billionaire who was discovered to be a pedophile, and the investigation proves to be a race to uncover a series of videotapes holding the illicit activities of the world’s elite. When a shadowy private company with ties to the U.S. government begins hounding the investigator, he will have to race to uncover the truth before all is lost.
The author did a truly amazing job of capturing the perfect balance between conspiracy-thriller meets detective-crime-mystery. The detail which went into the investigation itself was perfectly met in the opening chapters of this book, and the relationship between the protagonist and the team of officers he comes across; from his longtime friend to his protege and even his heated rival, the chemistry explodes off of the page. The insight into the protagonist’s mind as he seeks to find the answers to this mystery were so engaging as a reader to get into, and the way the author draws on current events such as the shocking case of Jeffrey Epstein will keep readers invested in the investigation as it draws on more and more.
This is most definitely a book meant to be read by those who enjoy thrillers; especially those with a mystery element to the story and a blend of action and suspense. The twists and turns the narrative takes and the shocking revelations as the protagonists peel back each layer of the mystery make this such a compelling novel, and the powerful imagery in the author’s writing will really draw readers further and further into the web of conspiracy and lies that the protagonist must unravel.
