One day Nick, a little boy, lost a tooth at dinner while eating corn. He put the tooth under a pillow at bedtime, and when he awoke, the tooth was gone but six dollars was magically placed there. Where did the tooth go?
This is the foundation of The Tooth Fairy Mystery created by author Amanda Smith with artwork by Mia Thompson. The illustrations take on more of the visual impact of the book than the text, and also I noted is the graphic layout of each page, superimposing background text making these pages into multi-layered eye candy for children to wander their attention through and be entertained as the story progresses. The combined text-and-illustrations make for a sensational storyboard layout, bringing this creation into a best-in-class book.
The mystery begins when, the next day, Nick’s sister Sam loses one of her teeth, and just like Nick did the day before, Sam puts her tooth under her pillow at bedtime. Nick stays up and hides in the closet when he sees the Tooth Fairy come to Sam’s pillow, remove the tooth and place the money there. Nick runs out and catches a ride in the Tooth Fairy’s special vehicle, and follows the fairy into a magical garden where the teeth the fairy collects are planted and become picturesque flowers – each with a tooth in the pedal.
Once again, the artwork accompanying the storyline is remarkable, showing a fanciful Tooth Fairy with her magic wand doing her task among all of the pillows of children losing teeth. The garden of tooth-flowers is absolutely stunning, and settles the question of where these teeth wind up. The story has a theme of Nick solving the mystery of where the teeth taken by the Tooth Fairy winds up, and the Tooth Fairy is happy to drive Nick home once she discovers he hitched a ride without her knowing.
Amanda Smith has created a book which should adorn the family libraries of all youngsters, as their baby teeth will fall out time and time again. I could remember putting my tooth under the pillow many years ago – but I think I only received 25 cents. Yes, times have changed with inflation, but the job of the Tooth Fairy remains the same.
The Tooth Fairy Mystery by Amanda Smith is a captivating and tender story that celebrates the magic of childhood and the timeless tradition of the Tooth Fairy. This book is not only a delightful tale, but also a beautiful reminder of the joy and wonder that comes with growing up.
