There comes a time and place in every person’s life where they must face the mistakes of their past. The idea of tackling head on the “sins of the past” allows the person in question to find a way forward by redeeming themselves. Being able to make up for the mistakes that define a person’s past character is the best way to discover what kind of a person they are in the present.
While redemption can sometimes feel out of reach, it is always important to find a system which will guide the person to the path of redemption they need. That is the path the protagonist of author Mic Lowther’s novel, The Unlikely Redemption of the Thief Sydney Bridgewater, found herself on. The second book in The Moorhouse Trilogy, the author explores the journey of Sydney Bridgewater, a thief who has stolen millions of dollars from employers over nearly three decades. After separating herself from her crimes, the thief decides to go on a journey of redemption, looking to use computer skills developed over the course of her thieving career to become a private detective, looking to help herself, a friend, and a stranger in her plan to ultimately find redemption.
The author did a wonderful job of crafting a narrative which is both intriguing and mysterious. The wealth of character development that the author undertook, from the first introduction of Quentin the Quintessential to the battle of wits against the Chairman and his group of solicitors, allows the readers to feel embedded into the story development and world-building which the author took on. The fast-pace of the narrative fits perfectly with the world of thievery and the imagery used in the author’s writing style, which gives the readers the opportunity to immerse themselves in the global setting of the narrative.
What really sets the book apart is how it engages with the multiple genres the book is in; from heist and crime thriller storytelling to mystery and suspense with a tech spin. The evolution of Sydney as a protagonist felt like Danny Ocean meets Robin Hood and Dick Tracey, taking the skills earned throughout her years as a thief and computer whiz and transforming into a detective and hero who helps people using her stolen millions. The supporting cast of characters perfectly elevated Sydney’s evolution, and the surprise twists and final breakdown of her escapades left an open ending that readers would love to see turn into a sequel. This is a must-read book for armchair sleuths!
