In author Kimberly Cole’s immensely fascinating story The Vision of the Quest, the reader is transported back in time to Abethar, a kingdom ruled by a monarch who was duped by his finest knight, who also happened to be his best friend. Here, the beginning of a war for the end times is recounted as well as a love incident that begat deep envy and hostility. The protagonists are three children dubbed “the chosen one,” who embark on a quest to find water of life and healing leaves for an ailing king so he may help save their mother from a dark-hearted, power-hungry individual.
Liana is going out to find employment and start afresh after having to sell her property to pay off the bank loan after her husband passed away. Unfortunately, her car breaks down following a storm, and she ends up stuck in the middle of nowhere with her three children, Roger, Emily, and Alicia. Luckily, they stumble onto an incredible, historic mansion, where they shockingly learn that Sir Bronze Pierce, the owner, has been expecting them.
Bronze requests they stay a few more days as their car gets worked on. He notices Liana’s necklace and recognizes it as one of the keys to all the kingdoms that he’s been so desperate to access and rule. Eager to get his hands on it, he uses medicines that have an evil energy to control her mind. But when the kids notice their mother acting strangely and Bronze getting attached to the necklace, it does not take long for them to realize that the kindness and generosity which drew them in were an enticing trap for something very sinister.
At the center of this story is a mission that appears beyond the main protagonists’ capabilities and abilities – traversing the second and third kingdoms, where they encounter voracious and bloodthirsty black wolverines. A variety of supporting characters who come to their aid, including Granite, a half-man, half-rock and Chip, a chipmunk with incredible powers, inspire faith in their cause. The main characters brilliantly embody the lessons their mother instilled in them – fight for what is right and stick by your principles no matter what, and show that you can always be trusted in the end.
The Vision of the Quest is a must read tale which is tremendously intriguing, adrenaline-inducing, and has out-of-this-world scenes that will shiver your bones. “To live is Christ, and to die is gain,” is the conclusion of what begins as a hopeless quest for rebirth but transforms into events predetermined by fate. In the end, there is a refreshing understanding and reflection on these Biblical words. Christian enthusiasts should not miss this well-written novel with a strong Biblical touch.
