When his father is diagnosed with cancer, it only seems right Coop should quit college and move back home. After all, he loves the farm and his family needs him. Becky has also recently moved back home after a college fling led to pregnancy. She loves her daughter but being a single mom is tough, and without her own mother and God to lean on, she doesn’t know how she would have pulled through. The two seem destined to fall in love, their friends certainly seem to think they make a good match, but when Coop is distracted by dark and sexy Misty, he finds himself falling to temptation and on the fast track away from God. Under His Wings, by author Rosemary Fisher, is a Christian fiction love triangle of intriguing characters each trying to find their place in the world.
Fisher has a friendly and straightforward narrating style; exactly the way you would expect the honest citizens of this small, religious farm town to tell a story. She keeps a good pace without giving away everything all at once, and readers may find the hours seamlessly flow away as they enjoy page after page of her novel. Under His Wings handles well the aspects of personal, family and community in the story. Benjamin Cooper Smith is the main character and the story centralizes around his personal life, that of his family, and of their relationship with their community and especially, church. The novel easily navigates between the autonomy of all of its characters while also bringing their individual personalities together into the fabric of the community.
Under His Wings has nothing but compelling characters. However, interestingly, the main character Coop is not nearly so complex as his supporting female characters, who seem much quicker to run into hard luck. Coop is a good Kansas farm boy, to borrow the phrase of supporting character Misty, who quits college and dreams of seminary to take over the family farm after his father is diagnosed with cancer. Coop is virtuous and reliable, both as a personality and as a narrator. Misty and Becky, by comparison, have much more dramatic backstories, mottled by poor decisions, and their characters have far stronger virtues and vices. Misty’s decisions are often pleasure-seeking and lack empathy, while Becky’s tend to be more practical and optimistic.
Set in a small Kansas farm town, not everyone knows everyone, but pretty close. Realistically, the characters pray frequently. God is a very real and very important figure in their lives. The recurring theme of faith and prayer seals the small-town aesthetic. Readers of Christian fiction will enjoy the characters’ growth in their faith, the setting’s supportive church community, and the story’s happy ending. Under His Wings is true to its genre and strong-handed in its message.
