So many aspects of life that get taken for granted have sadly been used as tools or weapons to instill a negative outlook on a group of people in the United States. From the earliest times of the fledgling nation to the modern era, education, economic status and even sex have been used to create double standards amongst people of different races. As writer Amitava Kumar once said, “Everything in American public life, when it comes to race relations, serves as a frame for a history of violence and degrading humiliation.” In author Todd Wooten’s second book White Men Can’t Hump (As Good As Black Men): Volume II: Sex & Race In America, the use of sex to dehumanize and criminalize Black Men gets examined in a whole new light.
Continuing from the pages of Volume I of the author’s work, this edition examines history and the modern era focusing on how sex has been used as a negative attribute against Black America while creating a positive for White America. Using actual quotes from history, extensive discussions throughout the author’s life and personal experience, the author relates a close examination of the stereotypes against Black America; why some stereotypes shouldn’t be viewed as a negative when they’re considered positives for White America, and more.
The author continues the journey of closely examining the negativity surrounding sex in regards to race, and does an expert job of showcasing how it affects other aspects like gender equality, viewpoints on education and educational values in regards to a person’s race, and more. Readers will genuinely be shocked by some of the facts and quotes used throughout the book, as they showcase the horrendous way sex and sexuality was viewed by white people throughout history in regards to anyone of color, in particular black people and Black Americans in particular.
White Men Can’t Hump (As Good As Black Men): Volume II: Sex & Race In America, much like the first book, is for anyone who is interested in history, studying the culture and injustice surrounding using sex negatively in regards to Black Americans versus White Americans, and studying how it has impacted life and race relations as a whole throughout history and in the modern age. As someone who has so powerful advocated for equality throughout my life, I was engaged from the first page on how something like sex has even been used in such a negative way. Whether it was disturbing quotes showcasing strange studies done by researchers on the anatomy of black men, upsetting quotes from historical figures that to this day or still revered, or even honest tales from the author himself on people, (men in particular), have always had a fascination with studying the anatomy of another man, this novel touched on some real and powerful imagery and topics that deserve discussion.
This is a fantastic second volume in a topic which is wide ranging and fuels open discussion on multiple fronts. For too long negativity surrounding sex and race has fueled the viewpoints of White America on Black Americans. While the topics discussed in the book are important and everyone will not agree on every single subject, one of the best aspects of the book is that it inspires discussion in the first place, forcing many to take a hard look at how the racial divide not only still exists, but is continuously widened in part due to sex and it’s relation to race in our world. If you haven’t yet, this is a book everyone should read and use to educate themselves on these two very important subjects.
