In this bold and smartly written sequel by author Kathy Hyatt Moore, the main protagonists from the planet Eruna, led by Lynette, a young wing woman, muddle through treacherous situations and dangerous encounters as they seek to escape from an expansive cavern in the mythical city of Halalouma.
Cliffside School, an institution every young winglet of Eruna was supposed to attend to learn magic and train to be Wind Dancers, was in danger of a devastating attack from Morren, a vengeful wizard, and his army of undead to take revenge against those he believed had betrayed him. Saarnak, another formidable force, also had a sinister plan and had made an unholy alliance with Morren to aid him in entering a portal large enough for him and his horde of demons to pass through into Eruna to destroy the Eight Realms and Cliffside School. Forewarned by Ooloo, a young and gifted winglet about the impending attack, Lynette and her life partner, Joran, endeavor to warn the leaders at Cliffside School of Morren and Saarnak’s plans.
As the story progresses, Lynette, Joran, and their companions encounter Mattern, Lynette’s father, adding an unlikely twist to the story. Along the way, mayhem ensues as Morren raises a non-stop pursuit with heartbreaking results for the group and unforeseen separations. As the book builds into a satisfying crescendo, Kathy Hyatt Moore steeps up the atmosphere as betrayal looms high, alliances change, and intrigue ensues. The result is a high-stakes gala supple with fantastical and magical elements.
The book cover has excellent cover art with the right set of color themes and gradients, along with eye-catching imagery that sets the right tone for readers. Kathy Moore has masterfully crafted her rich plethora of characters, both the protagonists and villains, with exquisite wordplay that provides vivid descriptions of their physical appearances, personalities, quirks, and temperaments. Her fine artistry does not stop there but includes a well-fleshed-out world populated by myriad beings, one that readers will find themselves immersed in almost immediately after they pick up the book.
Indeed, there is much to savor in Kathy Hyatt Moore’s Winds of Eruna, Book II: A Flight of Dragons. The worthy sequel carries with it a tangle of emotion as it takes Lynette’s story in an intriguing direction. The book’s ability to stay clear of common tropes is what gives this book great aplomb. I look forward to Book Three of this captivating series.
