While this concept has always been a subject of debate, the idea of evil is one which is recognized through all cultures around the world. The antithesis of good, evil is the fear and hatred which takes root in certain people, whether you believe that to be in their hearts or their souls, and affects people negatively. The battle of good versus evil is inherit within us all. As William Shakespeare once said, “The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones.”
In author John C. Owens Yosemite Summer, the author explores the concept of evil in the form of a supernatural threat that a group of young men encounter which threatens to challenge their faith and spirituality. After a young woman goes missing, a young man discovers the woman in the clutches of this great evil, and from there a series of events lead a powerful group of evil people to participate in a brutal crime. Soon a full investigation is launched into the girl’s disappearance, and a former detective and his sidekick are forced to travel to California to assist in the investigation before the evil becomes more powerful.
This is a unique and gripping mystery and thriller. The author does a great job of finding balance between the more spiritual and religious aspects of the characters and the narratives overall, with the intensity of the mystery and crimes the protagonists find themselves wrapped in. The story’s introduction showcases the author’s ability to create atmosphere and twists in the narrative, revealing the first victim of the novel and turning the story on its head immediately. From there, a harrowing tale of mayhem unravels, drawing the readers in further and further.
This is the perfect read for those that enjoy mysteries and thrillers, with a hint of suspense. It is also perfect for those who enjoy these genres set within the overall genre of Christian fiction, incorporating faith and spirituality into the narrative and characters’ backstories. The mystery and thriller genres are strong within this narrative, and as a fan of both I found myself drawn into the novel’s growing mystery and heart-pounding terror at the evil which is unleashed in the narrative, making this a strong read for audiences of all kinds.
A haunting, engaging, and mesmerizing Christian mystery and thriller, author John C. Owens Yosemite Summer is a must-read novel. This edge-of-your-seat thriller tests the readers’ minds as the narrative unravels slowly but surely, and masterful pacing and atmosphere really create a world that is both outrageously fictional and creative as well as realistic and honest, making this a memorable read.
